Pre-Order option on stock
Ability for customers to order a product that is not currently in stock but will be on a given date in the future. So rather than a stock value of "n" as currently, we can have a stock value of "y" with a pre-order date. So customers know they can buy early and in advance of the stock arriving with the retailer.

e.g. Lead Time 2-3 days, Made to Order, Dispatched in 3-5 days. -

Steve Jarvis MergedThis has already been done for us with products that are out of stock because they now show as On Request products due to asking for a tweak and this helps customers to order additional products that the distributors can supply.
Would be handy for some kind of feature so anyone could do something similar and for different reasons. -

Linda CHANDLER MergedWe need to show different delivery times for different products. With this system it either shows 'in stock' or for example 'On request'. An option is needed to show different delivery delay times for different products.

Neil MergedAvailability and lead-times really does need improving. It can't be unusual to have varying lead-times depending on product ranges and where they are sourced from.

View a pre-order product www.figureland.co.uk it just gets changed from out of stock by adding a quantity of stock and then choosing Pre-Order as the main category and the date of arrival is shown.
As soon as the main category Pre-Order is chosen, the words Out of Stock auto changes to Pre-Order.
However, I have requested for a new option to have a date shown near the top that is editable with a calendar because you can only put a date in the products description using text. -

LynneThis would help me also. I handmake my items & it would help to know that someone could pre-order certain items which would give me time to order in materials. It would need to be a function which we can switch on or off for each product only, as some of my items are unique.

We have a range which are all made to order, but our stock status is 'SOLD OUT'

Gareth Royston MergedWould be great to have the pre order function, I am losing out to competitors who offer pre orders, basically to order items in advance and only pay a deposit, and then the customer pays a final amount when it is ready for shipping as people would prefer not to pay 100% of the item cost upfront when the item could be out in a few months.
At the moment, I am including release dates on items available for pre order, but charging the full value. -

Dima MergedThanks Steve and Thomas, yes that's a good way to do it, however it's a work around rather then a long term and robust solution. I would like EKM to develop an option where I can select it and insert the arrival date/ time and once it has arrived I just need to confirm and convert it into inventory. Most platforms have this option and don't think it's a complex development for EKM team.

Doug MergedAs an interim/workaround I have put a "Made to Specification" as a Product Option - the customer has to manually select a drop down acknowledging the item is made to spec ( eg not immediate purchase .delivery expectation) .

Wes Shaw MergedWe work a lot on pre orders, and "out of stock" just doesn't fit right, as they have never actually been in stock. "Sold Out" would be much more appropriate for us.
Having other options would definitely be useful! -

Hannah Morris MergedI like the idea of having a few different options for items that are not in stock; Lynne suggestion for allowing back ordering yes/no. We had our wording changed to say 'Please Call To Order' as we felt this was more of a positive thing to say to potential customer however, the problem we then have is that, sale items for us are usually a 'Last Chance' type meaning that, once it has gone, we can not order in any more. We then have to make sure that when a size or colour has been sold is to remove the attributes very quickly so we do not have a potential customer thinking they will get a new item at a sale price.
This means extra work for us which in some ways isn't too bad but it is when we have a product with a mix of colours and sizes; a Cob sized reins in Black and Havana, but only a Full in the Black. We then have to copy the product, split the product by its colour so that customer cannot purchase a Full sized reins in Havana. Hopefully this makes sense! -

Instead of an add to cart button, it would be great to have a Pre-Order button instead, just to make the extra point that it is a pre-order.

Doug MergedEven if Button was different text may still order ... have similar situation to prevent, and use the ' option ' for product to implement an enforced response down down box (with confirmation text) so the customer must acknowledge the item is specific (e.g. to order or age restricted) this also benefits as prints out on order form as option text. Good work around to prevent customers accidentally ordering

PhilThe ability to choose which button you want for the individual product from add to cart/preorder etc. Each option could have a different colour so easily stands out, maybe on the attributes page for the product.

Shonai would find this very useful, we stock rollerskates which come in loads of sizes and colours, we just don't have the space or capital to keep them all so this would be an amazing addition to our on line shop.
